After their game against Kent State this weekend there’s no doubt left- Ball St. has the best football team in the MAC. They have dominated all five of their opponents this season without a single cliff-hanger to show for their 5-0 record.

BSU is getting some attention for their efforts, althouh they haven’t been able to mount the 25 in either of the important college polls yet. With their schedule for the remainder of the season, it’s doubtful that they will break the barrier. Yet, examining the rankings shows some of the lack of respect for this year’s BSU team. Wake Forest fell to Navy this week, the latter of which BSU defeated by a 12-point margain. Yet WF ranks 25th. Virginia Tech still ranks 20th despite their loss to the currently off-the-charts (formerly ranked) East Carolina and three narrowly contested matches, albeit against good BCS teams.

A quick search of Google news articles will show you that BSU doesn’t get the press they deserve. My search today came up with ~1,600 articles in the past month, compared to 7,500+ for VT, 5,100+ for WF, and 3,300+ for Boston College by comparison. The injury of Love- which saw plenty of national attention- no doubt inflated this number for BSU, as much as I hate to point it out. We’re still thinking of you, Dante.

BSU falls peril to the common trait of college football, as conveyed by Brent Lissenden of the Bleacher Report.

“That brings me to the real problem with college football: the regular season scheduling.  Many teams do not play enough quality competition to allow the BCS to accurately rank them at the end of the season.  This is the reason why teams like Kansas and Boise State (two years ago) get very little respect but end up performing extremely well in Bowl Games.

On the other side of the coin, there are teams like Hawaii that get much more respect than they deserve.  It’s simply too difficult to gauge how good a team is if they have not played quality competition.”

BSU deserves a better schedule next season, and I am sure they will be fighting for it! I would much rather watch them go 7-5 while playing some tightly contested games instead of going 10-2 with a series of blow-out performances.

On the other hand, maybe we should enjoy this as it lasts! :)

Just a quick shoot out to Ball State Football. I didn’t get the watch the game because of a family get together, but the conversations I had today were enjoyable as well.

They keep saying the IU defense has improved, but last night was a sin!

I never liked that Bill Lynch.

I don’t even follow sports but that was incredible!

And this coming from pre-church small talk. Ha!

To all my Bloomington friends- sorry guys, I told you so! :)

Before I start to recap recent times for you, let’s talk about the here and now. Ball St. is playing Navy in my backyard as I type. Tomorrow, we actually have friends coming over; friends with kids! That never happened when we lived in Columbia City :)

Also, tomorrow Beth is going canvasing for Obama- have to say I’m a little jealous! She’s going out with my mom and next time she and I will go out together. That is, when she’s the experienced one (she is my elder, you know).

Then Sunday, I get to see the best team in baseball at Great American Ballpark. The Cubs, of course! According to Reds.com, this is the view we will have. Somehow I think it’s a bit exaggerated from the upper deck! Nick and Amy- my brother and sister-in-law- were cool enough to buy the tix given that we do the driving. Not a bad deal at all- thanks Bro!
